Putting Quality First – BBC’s new product centred strategy

12 August, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Erik Huggers explaining BBC's new 'product' centred strategy:

It's a self-contained entity within BBC Online, which unites technology and editorial to meet a clearly defined audience need. Each product has a simple and concise proposition that's easily understood by the audience, is kept up to date, fits the overall strategy for BBC Online and has clear editorial leadership.

It's a strategic approach for the service as a whole – framed by what our audiences need from the web, rather than what we produce today for TV and radio – a change in culture for BBC Online.

Audiences will see products organised into five content areas (portfolios) supported by a common technical platform.

Times and Sunday Times unveil new-look websites – guardian.co.uk

25 May, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Times assistant editor, Tom Whitwell:

Whitwell said that in the 18 months of developing the pay strategy for the Times he had seen an "infinite" number of ideas but that the digital plan was not to become a "news aggregator or a social network".

"What we are trying to say is we are not going to show you all the news, [like] going to Google News and seeing 4,000 articles, we are going to give our take," he said.

Whitwell said that the paper aims to build real, meaningful community relationships between journalists and readers. Part of this strategy will see users having to post under their real names only – there will be no anonymous posting or use of pseudonyms, which Whitwell believes does not build real community.

"The principle is to encourage comment under real names," he said. A colleague added that the Times and Sunday Times would only consider allowing users to post anonymously if they had a real reason to protect their identity.

Google’s Schmidt: ‘We Have A Business Model Problem, Not A News Problem’ – paidContent @ ASNE

Google’s Schmidt: ‘We Have A Business Model Problem, Not A News Problem’ – paidContent @ ASNE

Eric Schmidt on future of news at ASNE:

"“When I go to a news site, I want that news site to know more about me, what I care about. I don’t want to be treated as a stranger.” To avoid what we used to call “daily me” where all you see is what you want and ask for, though, in Schmidt’s ideal news world, the site offers him options he might not like. “I want you to challenge me. Here’s something new; here’s something you didn’t know; here’s an opposing view.” Two thirds will ignore the option; he wants to reach the third that won’t. This has particular resonance if you think about the way Google has been using actions to predict behavior or to deliver information with Google Buzz, ad targeting in GMail and other areas."
