Citizens map the Gulf oil slick with balloons and kites – MIT Center for Future Civic Media

11 May, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

"We're helping citizens to use balloons, kites, and other simple and inexpensive tools to produce their own aerial imagery of the spill… documentation that will be essential for environmental and legal use in coming years.

We're not trying to duplicate the satellite imagery or the flyover data (though we’re helping to coordinate some of the flyovers and trying to make sure the data is publicly accessible). We believe in complete open access to spill imagery and are releasing all imagery into the public domain."

Ordnance Survey offers free data access – BBC News

Ordnance Survey offers free data access – BBC News

Mapping agency Ordnance Survey (OS) has launched a service offering free and unrestricted access to most of its map data.

However Ramblers, the walkers group, has expressed disappointment that OS' paper maps have not been included.

Ordnance Survey said the decision to leave out the paper maps was "in the national interest".

"There was concern that by giving away the 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps you would undermine the continued provision of a nationwide paper map series," said a spokesperson.

"It is in the national interest to have a nationwide paper map."
