Roy Greenslade: Iranian journalist-blogger wins freedom prize

"Jila Bani Yaghoob, an Iranian journalist-blogger and women's rights activist, has been awarded a freedom of expression award by the global press watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Her blog, We are journalists, which records news and social issues, particularly those affecting women, has placed her "in the forefront of the struggle for freedom of expression in her country," says RSF."

    […]

The award for best newspaper website, which GNM has won four times, has been dropped this year, but guardian.co.uk – the GNM website network that includes MediaGuardian.co.uk – has been nominated for best news site alongside four others.

Guardan.co.uk faces competition in this category from BBC News, Salon.com, NPR (National Public Radio) and the New York Times.

    […]

The BBC has been nominated for best politics site for BBC Democracy Live, which features extensive coverage of every region in the UK, including live video feeds from parliaments and assemblies throughout the country."

Online Journalists Make Pulitzer History – Mashable

    Jolie O’Dell at Mashable:

“Today, a cartoonist for SFGate.com, the online arm of the San Francisco Chronicle, and an investigative journalist at ProPublica won Pulitzer Prizes for their work. The reason we’ve dubbed these wins “history-making” is because this is the first time any online-only publication has won the prestigious award for editorial content.”

Update: Interview with Prof Stuart Allan at France24 [link in French] where he offers his thoughts on the prices.
