So just who does get social media?

October 25, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Matthew Eltringham:

In the last decade or more, the pressure of diminishing resources and increasing output has taken away the opportunity for journalists to do their job properly: to get out of the office and talk to real people about real things.

But the social web has given us a second chance to reconnect with people – albeit in a virtual way – and we should grab hold of that opportunity with both hands. Collaborative journalism, networked journalism, distributed journalism, mutualised journalism – call it what you will, this is the real prize that social media offers media organisations.

We should grab it with both hands, because if we don't the audience will grab it for themselves.

The Social Network Election – BBC College of Journalism

The Social Network Election – BBC College of Journalism

Matthew Eltringham, BBC Interactivity Assistant Editor:

"But isn't social networking supposed to be more that just a megaphone and be more about conversation and dialogue? There's plenty of broadcasting going on but just how much engagement is there, beyond the politically obsessed, with real people?

    […]

Beyond the activities of the major parties, there's a mixed picture of just how much people are themselves engaging with the online election.

    […]

Politicians don't always make it easy for themselves – building a successful online relationship takes time and effort. An election campaign is clearly the time when the parties want and need to engage with the electorate and the potential that social media offers them is huge. But social networks are only the means to allow that engagement; it's how the parties and the politicians use them that is the key."

    The networked election

"Matthew Eltringham, Assistant Editor, Interactivity at the BBC, and Charlie Beckett, the director of POLIS at the London School of Economics, gave a Journalism Programme masterclass on the networked election.

They discussed the impact of social media and how the political parties and journalists are likely to use these networks in the general election campaign."
