The Internet election?

24 May, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Stephen Tall:

Did the internet change the course of the election? At a national level, probably not (or at least not much). But at a local level – whether for council or parliamentary elections – email and Facebook, blogs and Twitter, websites and YouTube can each make a real difference to an individual candidate’s campaigning efforts, offering them the chance to motivate supporters, and communicate directly with voters. None of these are a replacement for regular Focus leaflets and door-to-door personal contact; but they are an increasingly essential addition to our traditional pavement politics.

#wmf: Jon Snow slams leaders’ debates in ‘golden age’ for journalists

21 May, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Jon Snow speaking at the Westminster Media Forum event, 'The Future of News Media':

"Three debates and the lifeblood was drained from the rest of the campaign. You used to have spontaneous press conferences (…) but [in 2010] in terms of actually putting out their stalls in which policies are aired in a structured way over three weeks, there was none of it. There were three men everywhere you went.

    […]

The tabloids had a dreadful election because there was nothing to report. All there was to report was the TV debates, they had to hook into TV (…) When the viewer had thought that somebody had won they were then told by the media, the tabloids, they were wrong."

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused for this. We do hope that you may be able to join us at the later date instead.

Have you got an election-shaped hole in your life? – The Guardian

18 May, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

    Alain de Botton:

"The sense of uncertainty, the ecstatic sense that anything might happen, has given way to a slow-footed normality. Politicians who impressed us by seeming so vulnerable, unsure, spontaneous and as a result tantalisingly and excitingly "alive" have now reverted to type. Standing outside their imposing ministries, they are once more sounding certain, confident, unflappable, as though everything was always meant to be like this – even though we know that, briefly, the grown-ups' rules were in the air and life was malleable and agreeably chaotic."
