Al-Jazeera English to launch on Freeview 1st July

June 30, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Al-Jazeera English launching tomorrow on Freeview C89, airing live daily from 18:00 to 23:00.

Al Anstey, director of media development:

This is a breakthrough for us; it will give us substantial reach to more than 80% of homes in the UK. At three-and-a-half years old we are steadily gaining the reputation and trust and loyalty of our viewers. We offer distinctive content and there is a real appetite for high-quality news. The pain of the economy means the industry is less able to go out and do the job of covering news; this launch on Freeview shows our commitment.

Wadah Khanfar, director general:

Providing content to the widest possible audience free of charge is part of al-Jazeera's ongoing mandate and mission. With a large network of bureaux [more than 60] and with unique access to under-reported regions across the world, al-Jazeera English will bring a much needed international perspective to this important and diverse region.

Journalism and ‘the words of power’

May 28, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Excellent, must-read from Robert Fisk:

This isn't just about clichés – this is preposterous journalism. There is no battle between power and the media. Through language, we have become them.

[…]

this vocabulary is not adopted through political connivance. It is an infection that we all suffer from – I've used 'peace process' a few times myself, though with quotation marks which you can't use on television – but yes, it's a contagion.

And when we use these words, we become one with the power and the elites which rule our world without fear of challenge from the media.

Al Jazeera will help persecuted bloggers, run their stories

May 24, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

Gulf Times (Doha):

“On the first day of the Fifth Annual Al Jazeera Forum yesterday, Wadah Khanfar, Director General of the network, announced ‘The Al Jazeera Initiative for Internet Freedom’, outlining four plans to provide information to the widest possible audience while promoting high standards in online journalism. … As part of the initiative, Khanfar also announced a programme aimed at supporting the rights of online journalists, bloggers, and other individuals who write and report online. ‘There are too many cases of bloggers being persecuted for telling the truth or for voicing their opinions,’ said Khanfar. … The programme will be part of the Network’s Public Liberties and Human Rights Desk and will allow individuals who have faced difficulties to bring their case to the attention of Al Jazeera. The Network will run the stories as part of Al Jazeera’s television broadcast.”
